䷢ Progress of Mankind: Boon or Bane?
I recently came across a 19th-century quote that said humans use electric appliances for luxury and then work hard just to pay for them. Even today, this feels relevant. In our constant effort to improve our lifestyle, we often want something better than what we already have. While this brings comfort, it also fuels greed and overconsumption.
Take the invention of the wheel. It started with a simple purpose and evolved into bicycles, cars, and advanced transport systems. Life became faster and easier—but at what cost? Urban development and expansion often lead to deforestation and environmental damage. While basic needs are met more efficiently, nature suffers, and that threatens our long-term survival.
However, not all progress is harmful. Medical and technological advancements in healthcare are true examples of meaningful progress. From understanding diseases better to saving lives, the impact is invaluable. My respect goes to everyone in the medical field—doctors, nurses, support staff, and emergency workers—whose efforts truly make a difference.
Perhaps progress itself is not the problem. The real issue lies in how we choose to progress. When growth is balanced with responsibility and care for nature and humanity, progress becomes a true boon rather than a bane.
